Northern Delights
Heading towards the north, we explore the geothermal region of Mývatn. This surreal landscape boasts bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and otherworldly rock formations. A visit to the striking Hverfjall volcanic crater rewards us with panoramic views of the area’s geothermal wonders.
The nearby Goðafoss waterfall, with its legendary history, captivates us with its sheer beauty. We learn about the ancient Viking traditions and the role this waterfall played in Iceland’s conversion to Christianity.
The Golden Circle:
Our first destination was the famous Golden Circle. This scenic route took us through three stunning natural wonders: Thingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, and the awe-inspiring Geysir geothermal area, where we witnessed the erupting Strokkur geyser shooting hot water into the sky.
Glaciers and Ice Caves:
Continuing our journey, we ventured into the ice-covered wonderland of Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe’s largest glacier. Equipped with crampons and ice axes, we embarked on a thrilling glacier hike. We also explored mesmerizing ice caves with their stunning blue hues, formed by the movement of glacial ice. The experience of being within a living glacier left us awestruck.
The South Coast:
Heading south along the rugged coastline, we encountered picturesque black sand beaches like Reynisfjara, with its dramatic basalt columns and roaring waves. Nearby, the picturesque village of Vik provided a charming stop to learn about local folklore and enjoy traditional Icelandic music.
Skaftafell Nature Reserve:

Husavik, known as the whale-watching capital of Iceland, offered us an opportunity to get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. We embarked on a thrilling boat tour, spotting humpback whales, minke whales, and even a glimpse of the elusive blue whale, the largest animal on Earth.
Westfjords:
The remote and rugged Westfjords region beckoned us with its untouched beauty. Here, we found stunning fjords, towering cliffs, and abundant birdlife. We hiked along breathtaking coastal trails, soaking in the isolation and pristine nature that surrounded us.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula:
Our final destination was the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature” due to its diverse landscapes. From the iconic Snæfellsjökull volcano to the charming village of Arnarstapi and the stunning Kirkjufell mountain, this area encapsulated the essence of Iceland’s scenic wonders.
